Lilis Picks SIGN UP FOR LILI’S PICKS

This is the most popular Chanel bag of 2018 (at least in the United States). We actually have hard data on this (psst…we may release a little article on this in the near future :). So what is it that makes this bag so popular?

It’s a classic and really, it has always been popular since it’s debut. The Boy Bag has become one of those iconic bags to have in your collection. Unlike your traditional flat bag, it’s boxier and it’s more casual.

In a sense, the Boy Bag is the updated version of the 2.55, and unlike the 2.55, this bag has corners. Rightly so, the Boy Bag also has “that edgy” look to it, whereas the Chanel 2.55 bag is truly classy and classic.

Even so, the Boy Bag will basically never go out of style. It’s also iconic. And the wonderful thing about it is that it can be dressed up or dressed down.

The Story Behind The Bag

Apparently, Karl Lagerfeld designed this bag for himself (or for fun in his spare time). It hit the market about five years ago (I originally thought it was released in the 1990s, but I had assumed wrong). According to the Chanel website:

Created by Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic design owes its name to Gabrielle Chanel’s first love, Boy Capel. Strict Lines Rectangular shape affirms a boyish allure.

How Do You Know It’s A Boy Bag?

The main signifying features of the Boy Bag is the continuous outer edge work – a three-humped runner that outlines the periphery of the entire bag. Finally, the braided chain (Chanel calls it the “Gourmette Chain”) makes it stand out from other Chanel bags. The idea behind the chain was to express an androgynous spirit.

The Graphic Clasp

You’ll see all Boy Bags with a “Double C” rectangular fastening system. They will vary slightly from bag to bag, but the Double C and the rectangle are omnipresent.
