HISTORY & BACKGROUND
Founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy, this luxury fashion brand wasn’t always the iconic sight we see and love today. When it was first established, Hubert de Givenchy decided his luxury house would launch Les Séperables, which featured floaty blouses and puffy skirts.
This collection drew critical acclaim, and Givenchy was thrust into the mainstream fashion limelight, with Vogue stating it was a ‘wonderful first collection.’ His first iconic piece was the Bettina Blouse, and his first muses were Suzy Parker and Dorian Leigh.
Ready to Wear Fashion
In 1954, Givenchy decided it would be the first luxury house to offer ready-to-wear designs. This became known as ‘Givenchy Université. During the 1960s, the Givenchy iconic short dress was featured in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, when the legendary Audrey Hepburn wore it.
Expansion, LVMH, and More
The next period of time would be an exciting moment for the Givenchy brand. First, the fashion house collaborated with Balenciaga for a Charity Gala. This then instigated the next phase of the fashion house, where it would move to its current home, 3, Avenue George V in Paris, opposite Balenciaga’s headquarters.
In the 1970’s Givenchy would heavily expand the line to feature jewelry, ties, upholstery, shoes, kimonos, and more. In 1988, Givenchy would join LVMH, a French luxury house featuring Louis Vuitton. In 1995, Hubert de Givenchy would leave the iconic Givenchy brand.
ORIGINS OF THE FIRST GIVENCHY HANDBAG
During a 12-year run, Riccardo Tisci would introduce many handbag silhouettes that would elevate Givenchy into a new realm and create iconic looks that had never been seen before. One of these staples is the Antigona.
ICONIC GIVENCHY HANDBAGS
Handbags produced in the Givenchy workshops are delicately hand-crafted from the finest materials. Typically utilizing soft leather, each handbag is supple, soft, and should be able to stand upright on its own, without any assistance.
The Antigona
This is the most iconic Givenchy handbag. It was first introduced in 2010 and became the staple bag for every luxury fashion lover in that same year. Still to this day, it’s a favorite amongst many. Its simple shape and structured silhouette make it easily recognizable and incredibly popular, with different-sized versions now available.
The Pandora
The Pandora has a much simpler form and is fantastic for those who like a more casual look. It’s named after Pandora’s Box, as the bag has a box-inspired silhouette that follows the mythology. It’s a unique setup and has more than meets the initial eye, making it an exciting bag for any luxury fashion lover.
The Nightingale
The Nightingale is one of the most iconic staples of the Givenchy fashion house brand. It has a timeless silhouette and gives ample space inside. It is perfect for those who always want to look ready while out and about. It takes inspiration from the famous Florence Nightingale, given the modern and feminine twist to an already iconic moment in time. It’s a minimalist bag that will effortlessly impress anyone who sees it.
THE GIVENCHY EMPIRE
While Givenchy started in apparel, its dominance in the bag scene shows that this luxury fashion house offers so much. Fans of the brand will eagerly await an updated Antigona with each new release. Time will tell what new iconic silhouettes this French fashion house will continue to put out into the world. Since its inception in 1953, Givenchy has dominated the fashion scene.
